What is a cone shape top? It guards from the sun and rain, a farmer’s hat made by hand from either palm leaves, bamboo, rattan, nipa. It has many names. Some call it the leaf hat, Non Bai Tho ( poem hat), salakot, sugegasa among many others. The Mayon volcano in Bicol where my mother’s family is from, is said to be the shape of a perfect cone. It is a 3-dimensional geometric shape that has an equation of radius, height, length; generalized to higher dimensions. It’s a funnel you put against your ear to hear the ocean, a megaphone sending out a signal, a party hat. A form of protection and what lays hidden. It’s also where you will find us between the corners of Oakland, Emeryville, Berkeley.
